Credit score

A 3-digit number, usually from 300 to 850, that predicts how likely you are to repay debt on time. Lenders use it to set rates.

Your credit score is calculated from your credit report. Common scoring models weigh payment history and how much of your credit you use most heavily. The age of your accounts, new applications and your mix of credit count for less.

You have many scores, not one, because there are different models and three credit bureaus. A higher score can mean lower rates on loans and cards. Checking your own score does not lower it.
