About WalletPrep

WalletPrep is a free money plan for people who are just getting started: the right next step, the short lesson behind it, a calculator for your own numbers and a habit that makes it stick.

Why it exists

Most money advice is either a sales pitch or a wall of rules. WalletPrep puts the steps in order (a small cushion, the employer match, expensive debt, then investing) and explains each one in plain language with real numbers.

Who makes it

James Murray

Founder and editor · University of Missouri-Kansas City · London Business School

James started WalletPrep because money shouldn't feel scary, and knowing how it works shouldn't be something people feel awkward about. One Christmas his dad gave him and his siblings The Truth About Money by Ric Edelman, and he read it during his first years of college, between customers at the bank where he worked as a teller. He went on to earn an accounting degree from UMKC and a Master's in Management from London Business School, worked at Google, and founded a paid marketing agency. He reached a $1 million net worth by 28 and $2 million by 30, and he built WalletPrep to teach the same basics in plain language.

How we keep it accurate

Every figure in a worked example or table is calculated by code, and the site won't publish if the math doesn't add up. Yearly limits come from the IRS, SSA, FDIC and other primary sources, with the year shown. Read the full editorial policy.

How we make money

WalletPrep is free. Lessons, the plan and the calculators carry no paid placement. Here's exactly how it works.
