Charge-off
When a lender stops expecting payment on a debt and writes it off as a loss, usually after about 6 months of missed payments. You still owe it.
A charge-off is an accounting step by the lender. It doesn't cancel the debt. The lender may keep trying to collect, or sell the debt to a collection agency.
A charge-off is a serious negative item on your credit report. It can be reported for 7 years, counted from 180 days after the missed payment that started the delinquency.
