Key ideas

  1. Your landlord's policy does not cover your things. It insures the building. Your furniture, laptop, clothes and bike need a renters policy of your own.
  2. Replacement cost pays far more than cash value. In the example, the same theft pays Ana $2,500 with replacement cost and $900 with actual cash value.
  3. Liability coverage protects your savings. If a guest is hurt or you damage someone else's property, the policy can pay their costs and your legal defense.

Vocabulary

Insurance deductible
The amount you pay yourself on a covered loss or medical bill before your insurance starts to pay.

Insurance that pays for injuries or damage you cause to other people, up to your policy's limits.

Cash set aside only for surprises like a job loss, a car repair or a medical bill. A common goal is 3 to 6 months of essential costs.
