Total compensation

Everything a job gives you in a year, including salary, bonus, retirement match and benefits, minus costs like your share of health premiums.

Salary is only one part of a job offer. A 401(k) match, an HSA deposit, paid time off and cheaper health insurance all have dollar value, and commuting costs take some away.

Comparing offers on total compensation can change which one is better, since a lower salary with richer benefits can be worth more.

Example

A $66,000 salary with a 6% match ($3,960) and $600 of yearly premiums is worth $66,000 + $3,960 − $600 = $69,360.
