Split direct deposit

A payroll setting that sends part of each paycheck to one account, such as savings, and the rest to another.

You set it up through your employer's payroll form or portal by listing a second account and a fixed dollar amount or percent. That part of every paycheck lands in the second account automatically.

It is one of the simplest ways to pay yourself first, because the savings never reaches your checking account. The IRS offers a similar option for tax refunds, which can be split into up to three accounts.

Example

A $1,600 paycheck split as $160 to savings and $1,600 − $160 = $1,440 to checking.
