Origination fee

A one-time fee a lender charges for making a loan, usually a percentage of the amount borrowed and often taken out of the money you receive.

Origination fees are common on personal loans and mortgages. When the fee comes out of the loan, you get less cash than you borrowed but still repay the full amount plus interest.

Because the fee is part of the cost, it is included in the loan's APR. Compare APRs, not interest rates alone, when one loan has a fee and another doesn't.

Example

A 5% origination fee on a $10,000 loan is $10,000 × 5% = $500, so $9,500 lands in your account.
