Hardship program
A temporary arrangement from a lender or card issuer that lowers your rate, payment or fees after a setback like a job loss or medical bill.
You usually have to call and ask. Terms and length differ by lender. Some programs freeze or close the card while you're enrolled.
Get the terms in writing, including what happens when the program ends, before you agree.
Example
After a cut in hours, a card issuer agrees to lower a 27.99% APR for 12 months while you pay down the balance.
