Gross income
Your total pay before any taxes or deductions are taken out. Salary offers and loan applications usually ask for this number.
Gross income is the full amount you earn. For a salaried worker it is the yearly salary. For an hourly worker it is hours × hourly rate, plus any overtime. Tips, side gigs and other income can count too.
Gross income is bigger than what reaches your bank account. Lenders and landlords often use it, but a budget built on gross income will come up short. Budget from take-home pay instead.
Example
A $60,000 salary is $60,000 ÷ 12 = $5,000 a month in gross income. Paid every 2 weeks, that is $60,000 ÷ 26 = about $2,308 per paycheck before deductions.
