Debt settlement

A deal where a creditor accepts less than the full balance, usually after months of missed payments.

Debt settlement companies tell you to stop paying your creditors and save into a dedicated account, then offer lump sums. Under FTC rules, they can't collect fees until they settle a debt.

Settlement damages your credit, creditors don't have to agree, and the forgiven amount can count as taxable income.
