Credit utilization

How much of your available credit card limit you are using, shown as a percentage. Lower utilization usually helps your score.

Credit utilization is your card balances divided by your card limits. Scoring models look at it across all your cards and on each card.

Many experts suggest keeping it under 30%, and lower tends to help more. It is based on the balance your card reports, often the statement balance, so paying down before the statement closes can lower it. Utilization has no memory in most models, so it can recover quickly once balances drop.

Example

Balances of $1,500 on cards with $5,000 in total limits give a utilization of $1,500 ÷ $5,000 = 30%.
