Contribution limit

The most you can put into a tax-advantaged account in a year. The IRS sets the limits and often raises them.

For 2026, the employee limit for a 401(k) is $24,500 and the limit for IRAs is $7,500. People 50 and over can add catch-up contributions on top.

The 401(k) and IRA limits are separate, so you can contribute to both in the same year. The IRA limit is shared across your traditional and Roth IRAs. Putting in too much can lead to a penalty unless you fix it in time.
