Chapter 7 bankruptcy

A type of bankruptcy that erases many unsecured debts in a few months, after a trustee sells any property your state doesn't protect.

Most Chapter 7 cases end with a discharge about 60 to 90 days after the meeting of creditors. Many filers have only protected property, so nothing is sold.

If your income is above your state's median, you must pass a means test to qualify. Child support, most taxes and most student loans usually survive.
