Automatic stay
The court order that stops most collection actions, lawsuits and foreclosures the moment you file for bankruptcy.
Once you file, creditors generally must stop calling, suing, garnishing wages and foreclosing. Some actions, like collecting child support, can continue, and creditors can ask the court to lift the stay in some cases.
