The math

Why the minimum takes so long

Card issuers set the minimum low on purpose. A common formula is the month's interest plus 1% of the balance, with a floor of about $25. On $10,000 that starts at $291.58, and $191.58 of it is interest. As the balance falls, the minimum falls too, so the last few hundred dollars take years.

The math
  1. Balance$10,000
  2. 22.99% APR ÷ 121.92%
  3. Interest in month one$191.58
  4. Minimum: interest paid$18,068.11
  5. 3-year plan: interest−$3,933.55
  6. Interest you save=$14,134.56

Pick a date, then a payment

Choose when you want to be done and pay the fixed amount that gets you there. $523.68 a month clears $10,000 in 2 years with $2,568 of interest. $940.71 a month clears it in 1 year. Set it as an automatic payment the day after payday so it happens without a decision each month.

Lower the rate if you can

Every point of APR you shave off shortens the payoff. Ask your issuer for a lower rate, look at a 0% balance transfer if your credit is good and the fee is less than the interest you'd pay, or a fixed-rate personal loan at a lower APR. A lower rate only helps if you stop adding new charges to the card.

Questions people ask

What is the minimum payment on a $10,000 credit card?

It depends on your card's formula, which is printed in your card agreement. With a common formula (interest plus 1% of the balance, at least $25), the first minimum at 22.99% APR is about $291.58. Your statement shows your exact minimum and how long it would take to pay off at that amount.

How much interest will I pay on $10,000?

At 22.99% APR the balance costs about $191.58 in interest in the first month. Over the whole payoff that adds up to $18,068 at the minimum, or $3,934 if you pay $387.05 a month for 3 years.

Should I pay off credit card debt or save first?

Most plans start with a small emergency fund of about $1,000 so a surprise bill does not go back on the card, then put every extra dollar toward the highest-rate card. Card interest is higher than the return you can expect from savings.
